I rarely listen to "Breeding the spawn", so you should write 'maybe' in bold letters... Still dig "Effigy of the forgotten" _______________________ Cadaveric ringtones for free, just click: http://nihilistic-webzine-distro.fr

| Yeah I guess...
for myself I prefer Human Waste rather than Effigy of the Forgotten, because the sound is very different, it is cruder, rawer... makes the whole stuff sound more savage when the heavy compressed, mid-cut production of EotF makes the same songs a little less of that.
But both have awesome songwriting (not surprising it's almost the same tracklist) and are extremely good death metal. No shit.
I want to listen to both of them right now!

For me the production of Effigy makes it better, heavier, more powerful... It doesn't sounds as heavy and extreme as it used to be (When I was 16 it was too much for me), but it's still great. _______________________ Cadaveric ringtones for free, just click: http://nihilistic-webzine-distro.fr

| Another big point in favor of Effigy of the Forgotten is the vocals of Frank Mullen. I like them a lot. Deep as fuck.
I guess with these three records, SUFFOCATION brought death metal to new standarts of extremeness. This is my opinion.

| It's funny you guys talk about Suffocation, because tonight I just relistened to Human Waste for the first time in, er, 2 years? Incredible record, it's too bad they can't recatch that kind of energy on CD nowadays.
I have the feeling that what "killed" the classic death bands is that they all ended up sounding as clean as Metallica. What's the point of detuning your guitar, if it's to polish yer sound to the point it sounds like standard tuning, eh? _______________________ si tu te réveilles un matin sans avoir mal nulle part, c'est que tu es mort. I wonder how they would have sounded if they had kept the Breeding style and pushed it forward and forward... wow!! I do agree with you also when you talk about the prod, using too polished and clinical prod killed a part of the darkness in their music. I think this is why they lost credibility in the mid 90 : too polished, too nice, too clean... with the production, with the attitude, with the music itself.

I think another problem with Breeding is the fact it's not so tight... If it was a tight as Effigy, and with the same sound, it would have been more accepted I think... _______________________ Cadaveric ringtones for free, just click: http://nihilistic-webzine-distro.fr

| Why do you mean by "tight" ?
I think the aim of Breeding was the development of their sick melodical/technical skills rather than pure brutality... For myself the songwriting part is perfect. the prod could have been better, and the lyrics mostly suck compared to Effigy, but i don't care.

Tightly played means neat, all exactly in the right place... Not exactly surgically played, but neat... _______________________ Cadaveric ringtones for free, just click: http://nihilistic-webzine-distro.fr

It's not a matter of mistakes, but not being tight enough... For brutal death it's needed... _______________________ Cadaveric ringtones for free, just click: http://nihilistic-webzine-distro.fr

| Breeding was a "melodic" record, Effigy was more about rhythm, is that what you mean Gab? and yes, the argument that playing on a seven string guitar makes your sound fatter is old and tired.
excerpt from a Mike Smith intie that pretty much sums up everything:
"Back then, the bands' goal was to be original and create something of their own. Nowadays the scene has turned into more of an internal competition amongst bands where everyone is battling to be the best at the same techniques and styles"
"The respect level has grown with the fans. Now, if the major labels and promoters would do the same, we can finally get down to real business and help break the underground into the mainstream"
to me it's clear that they've polished their sound to enlarge their audience. I kind of understand that, you're not 20 all your life, at one point you get tired of making noise for the sake of the underground cause. these guys are in their forties, they just don't have the same state of mind anymore, it's like a different band. _______________________ si tu te réveilles un matin sans avoir mal nulle part, c'est que tu es mort. Isn't it a bit unrealistic to try make Money and live from Brutal death? So why bother changing things so much it becomes a real compromise? it is unrealistic, but Suffocation is known as a death metal band. they've returned in 2004 because they realized their reputation was still growing after their split. they probably went, "if you can make a living off music, it's got to be as Suffocation, because Suffocation already has a name, while we as individual musicians mean next to nothing". in other words, they chose to try to be a whale in a puddle rather than a goldfish in an ocean. _______________________ si tu te réveilles un matin sans avoir mal nulle part, c'est que tu es mort.
