WHAT DOES A PAPER ZINE SHOULD TO HAVE TO BE GOOD ???

i ask you about it... what do you think???????

i think bands from strange scenes are the best, also i like reviews from zines... some draws could be great...

maybe the cut n paste style has more, visual impact....

and well, i dunno...

I think a cool logo can help...

Jim: Make a really cool flyer with the logo for the next issue, and you'll see it might work much better... The flyers could reflect the content of the zine, so if it was made in a hurry peoples might be afraid... I found it a bit sorry that flyers for PUTREFFACTIVE looked less well made than the zine itself...

What I like to read in fanzines:

Snail mail adresses (Quite rare...)

Long interviews with more than 10 questions and long answers

Quite a lot of reviews that speak about many bands I don't know

Quite long or at least not too short reviews (3 lines isn't enough)

Yes I completely agree with you. A eyecatching logo as well as a decent cover reflecting the zine content is the key.
For my next issue I'll use my new logo as well as a necrotic & sexy pix, I have some idea, just wait.

Well, I was talking about FLYERS! Because I remember the one for your first or 2nd issue wasn't very appealing, unless your nose is always under the surface...

About the snail mail address, some bands don't even bother to put one on their release, sometimes just an email address or a myspace link.

Long inties, yes detailed as well but it depends on the guys' mood, for example when I read a KRATORNAS intie, however long it can be, I don't find anything exciting or mindblowing because the guy has nothing to say except that everything sucks, everybody should die, etc... Really useless chat according to me.

I don't want to piss black metallers off, but most of them hardly have interesting things to say.

don't worry I won't fall into the ease porn/grind visual, by sexy I mean in the putrefactive way.
About flyers, well those for the 3rd issue have been done in a hurry, whereas those of the 2nd one were a bit more appealing because I use some SINTURY inside lay out.

also in zines, the most interesting , i think, is to show some total unknown bands, is my total delight to know about it...

even is better i think if band has a total mystery besides it...

by example the band goat tyrant (pol) , i was checking good reviews and comments, but i tried to find some sounds, but i dont find any shit...

then for sure i should to make some trade to get it !!!

i think it is in the ways as the old Metal times were...

to look unknown bands by your own...

yeah GOAT TYRANT seems cool to listen to, I read an intie in the last Necroscope Zine. I think Adam shall dub me some tracks.
Gab also have some copies in his distro.

I also get a flyer about a split CD gathering RITUAL and TORTURER, do you know if this stuff is being distributed in Europe?

My zine have all those things...hehehe...but its black metal mainly oriented..I always put firstly snail mail addresses and then web ones and I ALWAYS put all contact I have after all the reviews and my reviews are something too much long.
And sometimes I have some wierd questions in interviews but not classicaly wierd...

GOAT TYRANT is influenced by very early BATHORY, with some few fast black metal... It's not really like early Bathory though, because drums differ and guitars might sound less like early speed metal...

GREAT !!! is somefrustrating if i read a review, the band sounds interesting, but at the end i find no any contact !!! ... how it could be supporting ???

at least some snail mail adresss , but... i think if the band has some email is better to put it too...

in the last times i saw some band, then i was total interested and quickly i wrote a snail mail asking for trade, i left it in the postal office, then... minutes before i went to internet and i saw that this band has some email !!!

at least here, the post services are expensives, not cheap!!! ... then i spent some money sendind that snail mail...

always to have the "whole" contacts there is something good...

and yes goat tyrant seems to be good one...

some speed / thrash Metal, as i red...

i like the mystery behind bands, it gives more anxious to get some stuff...

Yes I always put all contact/informations that I have but must say that rarely put eb-sites.just e mails.I found not too much underground web-pages.
Goat Tyrant is reall Ug band and yes they fortunately dont have mp3 on web.

YES !!!... just e mails are total ok !!! the matter is to enter in contact for some deal...

anyway, if a band has some web, anyone could find it just to seek on the net...

the difference would be between those who just satisfied themselves hearing some mp3 sounds ... and those who wants the original stuff, trading or buying...

I don't think big long reviews are necessary. Most reviews are completely arbitrary. It's all opinion anyhow. I care less about another's opinion. I will look on my own. Long interviews are boring. All of my interviews are straight to the point..just do what you want and it will all come together.

The editor must be insane. Only insane editors are willing to search out some demo from half way across the world just to review it in their zine. I much prefer reading the over enthusiastic Thai bad Engrish editors than the boring college boy ones. Having 'correct' grammer doesn't make a good writer, it's having a deep knowledge of what you're writing about that matters.

I don't like overly long reviews. I don't need to know about time changes and all that technical nonsense - I don't even know what a time change is! Just a small background info and a bit to try and tempt the reader to buy it is all thats needed. And if they end up being overly long, if you're doing 100+ reviews, they will get very repetitive.

Long interviews are fine though, as long as the band gives interesting answers!

Cunt Paste layout is best

in-depth inties, bands that have something interesting to say, an experienced editor with some sense of critics. 3 criteria that's already tough to match these days.

yes but if you find someone that writes proper reviews and seems to share same feelings with you on bands you know it's great cause you wil be able to use him as a reference to check new stuffs...the 3 lines reviews like "killer shit..." or "lame and gay.." is completly useless....

i do like direct intie such as asking blasphemophager to tell some alcoholic stories and to drop a few lines about their other band but a zine only based on that bores me to death...i prefer to read some long intie even if i need to skip some questions (like in bloodaxe 9 zine when he talks about magick and thingds like that)..

i add something on my list : not to limited in style, i can bear death metal only but grind only or black only sucks. Actually i like Devilment for that it's dark death, some black and some doom (traditional mostly)


i love zine thaat manage to create an atmosphere like cunt'n paste or dauthus which was so dark and occult...i do like some rags like "thrash attack" but it lacks a special atomsphere of its own...but an honest zine like compete necro suits me...

Actually I love Necroscope Zine as each time it's a huge amount of work, even if I am not a huge fan of the band featured, you can read about a lot of obscure bands. Even if the english is not perfect I find it decent enough to have an idea of the music. Of course you sometimes can't be as enthusiastic as Adam is about some raw black/death from asia.

Demons Jail Zine from Chile is a quite promising rag; Marcelo released his 1st issue in December 2007 with lot of exotic stuff: DENYING NAZARENE, BRUMA, CRUCIFIER, MISERYCORE, ASESINATO,...and more established bands: SCENT OF DEATH, HELSTAR...
The editor focus on Chile as well with some demo & zines reviews from his scene, pretty interesting.

actually i still need to check this one but when a zine is great i can read it even though i am not a fan of the band featured...of course i need a minimum bands i like...

I think it could be ready in a couple of weeks. There's been some delay but I manage to get a decent amount of inties compared to the previous issue.
