| INTERVIEW WITH JEFF BECERRA OF POSSESSED FAME, SPRING 2006.
1.HAILS JEFF! HOW IS THE WAR AGAINST CHRISTIANITY GOING?
Well, to tell you the truth a lot slower progress than I expected over the last twenty plus years. These fuckers are like insects that just won't die! Lol!!
2.BEEN READING ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Wow, that sounds like a pick up line in a shitty bar!! Lol!! Just kidding man. Actually I am reading The Club Dumas right now from Arturo Perez-Reverte. Great fucking book. It is the book that the movie The Ninth Gate was made after. I highly recommend it. Also me and Bay from Sadistic Intent both just read this book called The Descent from Jeff Long...it was about this guy who was hiking up in the Himalayan mountains and discovers a cave that goes in to Hell...good shit! Also I am trying to get an English version of the elusive Delomelanicon or the so-called Book of the Nine Doors of the Kingdom of Shadows, some say that it's not a real book, but it is.
3."METALLIC TYRANTS", THE TITLE FOR A NEW SKITZO SONG ON THEIR LATEST RELEASE "HEAVY SHIT" FEATURES YOU SINGING ON IT. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN CONTACT WITH LANCE FROM THE MIGHTY THRASH BAND SKITZO?
Shit...as long as I can remember. Lance and Skitzo were there right from the beginning. Lance is one of my oldest and dearest friends in the metal scene. I have nothing but mad respect of him and Skitzo as they really are troubadours of the metal scene. Great musick and a spectacular stage show!
4.WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU BEEN DOING MUSICALLY THESE DAYS?
Well, I am getting together with the members of Sadistic Intent and putting Possessed back together. This is a big project but we are making good progress and hopefully will be out by next year. I have known Sadistic for a very long time and after our collaboration for the Possessed tribute album (we did the Exorcist) it only made since to combine ourselves to resurrect Possessed once again. I also have some tentative plans to possibly jam with Vital Remains. In December I have plans to record with Kult Of Azazel as well. At present I am writing the vox for an album from Obliterhate (formally Raspatul) out of Singapore. We have some big names involved in the production of this album....so please, keep an eye out for this.
5.DO YOU READ MANY FANZINES THESE DAYS? DO YOU FIND THAT THERE IS A LACK OF THEM IN 2006 IN COMPARISON TO THE 1980'S? WERE FANZINES BASICALLY THE ONLY MAJOR TOOL USED FOR CONTACTING NEW METALHEADS IN THE 1980'S?
There definitely aren't as many fanzines out nowadays compared to the 80s. There are a lot more mainstream mags out there that address Death Metal. Back in the day DM got no fucking play from any of the mainstreams. I still love the fanzines that I come across as it reminds me of what it is all about, the fans, and the underground scene.
6.IS THE INTERNET A POSITIVE THING FOR THE UNDERGROUND OR DOES THE INTERNET LACK QUALITIES THAT THE PRE-INTERNET DAYS COULD OFFER?
I love the internet! It is great to make contacts and do music business over. The thing is, it seems like there are too many agoraphobic metalheads out there, meaning they don't go to many shows.
To me that is what it is all about. Going to the shows and seeing just what is out there in the scene. Mixing with the people and making new friends...not to mention...partying like a big dawg!! Lol!
7.DO YOU BELIEVE THAT EMAIL ADVERTISEMENTS HAVE PRETTY MUCH TAKEN THE PLACE OF SPREADING FLYERS VIA SNAIL MAIL? DID YOU SPREAD MANY FLYERS BACK IN THE DAY?
Yes I do. Advertisements/the internet are a much more efficient way to spread the word. I still see some flyers around the Berkeley/SF area, but those days seem to be pretty much in the past.
8.WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE STATE OF THE UNDERGROUND SCENE IN 2006 IN COMPARISON TO POSSESSED'S EARLY YEARS?
Well, as you know I disappeared for about 15 years. When I came back I found that the scene has changed in many ways, but stayed essentially the same in most respects. It is still about the music which is great. I noticed that there is a hell of a lot less flagrant drug use going on out in the open, and much less fighting. Also there are a lot more girls/women that are true metalheads which is awesome. I loved the scene back then, and I love it now. Who's to say, maybe it is just me that has changed, but always fucking metal!!
9.WHO WERE POSSESSED'S MAIN INFLUENCES AS THERE WASN'T MANY EXTREME METAL BANDS BACK IN 1983?
We were influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Mercyful Fate, Discharge, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden...shit anything that sounded cool and heavy. We used to hear all the newest/latest shit off of the local hardcore radio station KUSF out of San Francisco. We used to stay up late at night and hear bands like Raven, Metallica, Megadeth, Fang, Exodus, all this back when it was all very new.
10.WHO WERE THE VERY FIRST DEATH METAL BANDS IN YOUR OPINION? (I'VE HEARD THAT THERE WERE SOME VERY OBSCURE DEATH METAL BANDS IN THE EARLY 1980'S THAT HAD BLASTBEATS, SATANIC VOCALS BUT WERE LONG FORGOTTEN BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO UNDERGROUND OR NEVER WENT INTO A RECORDING STUDIO).
Possessed and Death.
11.WHO WERE POSSESSED'S FAVORITE BANDS TO SHARE THE SAME STAGE WITH?
Shit I liked just about all the bands we played with. If I had to pick some favorites, it would be Exodus, Dark Angel, Death Angel, Slayer, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, DRI, Corrosion Of Conformity, The Mentors, Venom, Voi Vod, Skitzo, Nasty Savage, Celtic Frost, Destruction...shit I am gonna' stop now as I am afraid to leave someone out...oh yes...and English Dogs!!
12.WERE POSSESSED HEAVY PARTYIERS?
We did party pretty hard at times..but we mostly practiced and took care of business. I think I partied about ten times harder than the rest of the band put together..lol!
13.DID ANY OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC GROW ON YOU THROUGHOUT THE YEARS?
Oh sure, I listen to everything! Classical, Jazz, Funk, Rock, Blues...shit you name it!! If it sounds good I will listen to it. I am not so caught up in trying to be "Metal" that I don't appreciate all kinds of music. I even own a banjo!! Lol!
14.DO YOU LIKE PRIMUS OR FUSION IN GENERAL AND WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER PLAYING THIS KIND OF MUSIC?
I think Primus is great. Larry was one of my best friends growing up and he is a very intelligent and cool person to know. He is also a great and creative guitar player. I personally would not be in a Fusion band as it is not my cup of tea. I will stick to metal professionally and leave the other stuff for the acoustic camping sessions.
15.WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE POSSESSED TRIBUTE ALBUM?
I loved it!! It was so damn cool to hear other bands playing my tunes. I felt like I had really "made it" after it came out. Usually only the big-time bands get tribute albums..like kiss or whatever, so it felt really great to have these bands play my music.
16.DID YOU LIKE THE LAST SLAYER ALBUM AND WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THEIR PUNK TRIBUTE COVER ALBUM "UNDISPUTED ATTITUDE"?
Sorry, haven't heard it. Should I?
17.WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ABOUT ALL THE OLD BANDS COMING BACK? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT SOME OF THEM ARE DISAPPOINTING THEIR FANS WITH AVERAGE ALBUMS?
I think that it is cool. Hey if the fans want it it is a cool thing to do. In fact I am getting the new Possessed together as we speak. It is all about the music. Once you are a true metal head you will always play, sing gig or whatever. Some people won't dig it, but fuck them as they don't matter anyway.
18.MORBID ANGEL WAS OBVIOUSLY INFLUENCED BY POSSESSED IN THEIR EARLY YEARS. DO YOU LIKE MORBID ANGEL AND WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THEM AS A WHOLE?
I remember Trey sending me some demos way back when and I thought that they were very cool. But again, I am not that familiar with their work.
19.WAS THE ARRIVAL OF GRINDCORE AND US BRUTAL DEATH ANY GOOD IN YOUR OPINION? IF SO, WHAT BANDS STICK OUT TO YOU?
Metal is metal to me!! Napalm Death has always been one of the premier bands out there. As far as Death Metal in the US I like Vital Remains...Let the Killing Begin!! Lol!! Shit, again though I have to tell you that I am and always have been, old school. I am not really familiar with the new terms of metal. To me good metal is good metal no matter what name it goes under.
20.WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THE MELODIC BLACK METAL BANDS WHEN THEY ARRIVED? DO YOU EVEN CONSIDER THESE BANDS TO BE REAL METAL?
For this I would need some examples. Mostly all I listen to is old metal, death metal, thrash metal, speed metal etc..Whatever sounds good to me I will listen to.
21.DID YOU LIKE THESE BANDS: DR.SHRINKER, NECROPHAGIA, BLASPHEMY, WITCHES HAMMER.
These are all great bands by my standards.
22.NAME YOUR FAVORITE HORROR MOVIES AND IN YOUR OPINION WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF HORROR LOOK LIKE?
I like all the Phantasm series. All the George Romero works. All the Chainsaw Massacre's. All of the Evil Deads. The future of horror to me is all in the quality of production, Back it the day all the gore looked fake as fuck, but now, it looks so much more real and that fucking rules! ;-)
23.WHAT'S YOUR VIEW ON SATANISM AND HAS IT CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
True Satanism has stayed true to it's roots. The only thing that has changed is that it has became far too trendy. Now we don't have to hide as much, as it is more publicly accepted.
24.DID YOU TRADE MANY TAPES BACK IN THE 80'S AND DO YOU AGREE THAT TAPES MAY BE TO HEAVY FOR WIMPS THESE DAYS?
I didn't trade so much as receive tapes. People from all over the world have always sent me their tapes, CDs, records, videos or whatever. I listen to every one of them. And some over the years have become quite famous. I love to hear new stuff, and I love to get my hands on rare and vintage material.
25.HOW MANY VINYLS WOULD WE FIND IN YOUR COLLECTION? ANY RARE GEMS?
I probably have about 100 very select vinyls. They are all locked up in my attic or a fireproof safe. I do have quite a bit of very rare items. They are my babies!! Lol!
26.THANK YOU JEFF FOR THE INTERVIEW, ANY FINAL WORDS?
Thank you for this opportunity, the honor is all mine. As always I would like to thank my family, my two beautiful children (Jeff Jr, and Sonny-Girl), my true love Crystal and all my brothers and sisters of the NYDM and the SFBADM..Also I would like to send my respect to the fellows in Sadistic Intent (Rick, Bay, Emilio and Ernesto) as they are my brothers forever. I hope to see everyone next year playing with the new Possessed.
