Something struck a nerve today. As we all know, pro cdrs cost quite a bit to release. Lets say its a limited pressing of 300 units, and at first the band wants 30 of these copies, and then the next day they want double the amount of copies, how is this fair to the label? To pay at least over $100 extra just so the band can sell copies and be heard?

As we all know, there is only so much of a demand for underground black metal bands.....so how could I possibly expect to sell more then fuckin 50 copies to even break even.

With experimental artists, like yourself Gab, easy to deal with, and in the long projets like Glaukom Synod is more heard then the average black metal band as you keep the labels happy by not making demands.

There's some exceptions with black metal, like Snowfall, who aren't demanding, thankfull and easy to deal with.

The majority of black metal bands that contact me for potential releases, get all demanding on me right from the get go and don't take the time to realize that SFM is a BORDER LINE NON PROFIT DISTRO/LABEL.

I'm getting as fed up as alot of people when it comes to black metal in 2008. Pretty soon SFM will be 90% experimental/noize label with the odd exception here and there like Snowfall or other bands that im friends with.

FUCK!

In conclusion after even more thought, there has only been 2 releases thus far black metal wise on SFM being TOXIC HOLOCAUST / HELLACAUST split cdr, and a KING demo cassette. There will only be 2 more on SFM being SNOWFALL "Forest Of Eld" & SNOWFALL / BENIGHTED IN SODOM split cdr. After these 2 releases are cleared, I will put a disclaimer on my website that clearly states SFM Records is a "experimental/noize" label release wise. As these kind of artists do not give me a hard time and realize there isn't much fuckin money to be made in the underground or much to work with in the beginning.

Yes, SFM will make the ODD expection for close, friends bands that play black metal like Snowfall for example....or old school death metal bands Twisted Evil ...but for the most part, I do not have the patience to be bossed around or told what to do, because I am the one behind SFM.

That's why I make the terms right away. If the bands don't like it, fuck off. I'm not here to release every fucking band in the world. Most of my releases are either from my projects or my friends...I think Snowfall got a sweet deal with me, but I'm going to lose a shit load of money...haha

Way I see it...SFM is a small, underground label. If bands want shitloads of free copies, they best look elsewhere as I allready send free copies to zines for review, trade like a madman, so of course, the bands get heard.

4 different artists that have been on SFM in the past are now on a major or a semi-major underground wise labels. There is a reason for that. Proper promotion.

Underground labels like ours, should be used to a bands advantage as a "stepping stone" to be heard without spending lots of their own money, but also can't expect a label to spend lots of money as well. This "stepping stone" affect is the only way for a band to be heard really by a major label, to be picked up & signed.

Fuck the band if they want money, this is fucking underground.
If they want 100 copies than they shoul release it by themselves.
Theres around enough good bands to check for releases but not for sure the ones (children)that cut their veins on Immortal and shits.
There more good persons in underground but they mostly seek the tape not cdr releases. Wink

I will only take a cd-r release if I support the label or bands material...and it's quality. In this case, the Pathogen cd-r Keegan put out. Otherwise, cd-r fuck off :rireee:

The best recordings Cobain ever did was with Seattles's EARTH. Great doom/sludge band.....Almost sounds black metal, not many people know he did vokills for EARTH for a bit.

Same here. It's safe to say that alot of modern black metal days aren't too sure of how the underground works, and how much money it actually costs to put out a professional looking release. Sending promo copies to zines, doing trades/postage fees, etc etc adds up fast!

I've only had one experience since the label has started...Cain can tell you. These primadonna bitches got mad at me when I told them I would not pay their mastering fees for Necromorbus Studios, nor would I release their material with a 20 page A5 booklet. Fuck you. Do I look like I have the finanacial means of Century Media? My releases take food from our plates...and I do it for the love of it...not money.

Some peoples would even make me a little nervous concerning trades... They think they're all right, and so they don't answer your (repeated) questions because it's too stupid to ask if it's a CDr or CD demo and if they can trade master + covers... So they send what they have in mind, withotu taking care of what you could write: Only a single demo, and you shouldn't say anything... You insist asking for 4 more covers (distribution might help)... They insist on trying to send 4 more ready-to-use copies... What the fuck? I am so dumb trying to explain these matters to bands?
Maybe I shouldn't bother anymore and let them loose their money with the postal service...
